11 charged under Dangerous Drugs Act
Detectives assigned to the Narcotics Division charged 11 persons including five Costa Ricans under the Dangerous Drugs Act earlier today.
Charged with possession of ganja, dealing in ganja and taking steps preparatory to export ganja are:
Khalil Rowe, 22, mason of Malvern, St Elizabeth; Conroy Perue, 53, farmer of Junction, St Elizabeth; Randy Smith, 37, farmer of Lacovia, St Elizabeth; Peter Thomas, 49, farmer of Santa Cruz, St Elizabeth; Fritardo James, 21, mason of Santa Cruz, St Elizabeth; Ricardo Farquharson, 30, chef of Glen Isle, Westmoreland; and Costa Rican nationals Kiara Watson, Miguel Garita, Jose Arias, Edson Ariel, and Jefferson Matarrita Rojos.
Reports are that about 11 a.m. on Tuesday, lawmen were conducting operations in the Sweet River district, Savanna-la-Mar when they approached the men at a makeshift shed in bushes where they were in the process of compressing and packaging the drug.
The illicit drug weighed approximately 1000 pounds and has an estimated street value of J$4 million.
Garita, Arias, Ariel and Rojos were charged with an additional offence of illegal entry.
They are scheduled to appear before the Westmoreland Parish Court on February 16
