A unique addition to the list of contestants in the Jamaica Independence Festival Song Competition 2018 is the Escarpment Road New Testament Church Choir, which boasts more than 70 members, of which 63 have entered the contest.

Based in Hermitage in August Town, the church has been operating for more than 50 years and has implemented a large number of social mobilisation and outreach programmes in their community.

The members are adamant about stirring positive growth in volatile communities. They opened and still run one of the oldest basic schools in the area, providing a homework centre for schoolchildren, and coordinating a senior citizens' club named Starlight.

Serving is, in fact, their reason for entering the competition.

"We pretty much specialise in this sort of thing, reaching out to people. Music is just another means, one of the greatest means, of reaching out and touching even more people," said choir member Stephenson Samuels.

Their entry in this year's competition is Strong Jamaican.
