Portmore United's players celebrate after defeating Santos De Guapiles of Costa Rica 7-6 on penalties in their CONCACAF League round-of-16 match at the National Stadium last night.

Red Stripe Premier League champions Portmore United advanced to the CONCACAF League quarter-finals after a 7-6 penalty shoot-out victory over Santos de Guapiles of Costa Rica at the National Stadium last night.

The Portmore team lost the second leg 2-1 but they had won 2-1 away in the first leg so the two-way tie ended 3-3 on goal aggregate.

It went straight into the penalties to decide the overall winners. It was 4-4 after  five penalties each and Portmore prevailed as the shoot-out went into sudden death. Portmore's goalkeeper Kemar 'Porridge' Foster came up big with two saves. He stopped Renmond Salis' kick to send his team into wild celebration.

"I am overwhelmed that the team has gone through. They led 2-0 but we got back a goal. I am overjoyed to make the save that put us through," an obviously delighted Foster told STAR Sports immediately after the game.

"We need to put in some more work. We have to go back and prepare as it is a tough league," he added.

Portmore missed an early chance to lead but Maalique Foster blasted wide of the left post with only goalkeeper Bryan Morales to beat.

Striker Ronaldo Dinolis sent his team in the lead when he beat Foster from close range in the 19th minute. On the stroke of half time Brayan Lopez doubled the advantage for visitors.

However, Maalique Foster made amends for his early miss with a neat finish in first half injury time. That strike sent the game into penalty kicks after both teams failed to score in the second half.

Coach of Portmore, Shavar Thomas, said his team had the chances to put away the match before penalties.

"We had the chances but sometimes you have to make the bounces go your way. We deserved it as the team had been working hard during preseason. The dream is still on," Thomas shared.
