Since its inception in 1980, GC Foster College of Physical Education and Sport has been struggling to adequately develop teachers and coaches for the sport of swimming.

Acting Principal Maurice Wilson toldSTAR Sports that the diving pool and 50m swimming pool at the institution are too big to facilitate teaching and have been abandoned. The situation forces the institution to transport their students to other swimming facilities at an annual cost of over $5 million.

Wilson stated that the college is in urgent need of a 25m pool to prepare teachers and coaches for the discipline.

"We spend at least $5 million per year to transport students for them to learn to swim. It is one of (the biggest items on) our biggest budget. We could have cut swimming out of our programme, but we realised that if we do not produce swim teachers, then who is going to produce them. All we are asking for is assistance in putting down a swimming pool that we can teach persons to swim in," Wilson said.

business perspective

"The swimming and diving pool have never been in operations from 1980. When we did the feasibility study, we found out that it is not feasible from a business perspective to maintain an Olympic size pool. We need a pool to teach students how to swim and for rehabilitating persons whenever they sustain an injury. The Olympic size pool is too deep for us to teach swimming."

"For the past two years, the school board has wanted to construct a 25m swimming pool for us to carry out the functions I just mentioned. The Olympic size pool has to be maintained by the government. We do not have the budget for that. I was expecting the swimming pool to start already but it is needed," Wilson said.
