A late night drug run off the coast of St Elizabeth was cut short when lawmen intercepted a canoe allegedly carrying more than 2,000 pounds of ganja near Alligator Pond.

Four men were taken into custody following the bust, which was carried out by members of the Firearms and Narcotics Investigation Division and the Jamaica Defence Force Coast Guard.

Charged are Paul Stanley Kelly, 57, and Omar Nard, 40, both of Rocky Point in Clarendon, Achiema McKoy, 37, of Braes River in St Elizabeth, and Carl Manderson, 35, of Hellshire in St Catherine.

Investigators say the team spotted and intercepted the canoe shortly after midnight on March 3 during the joint operation.

When the vessel was searched, officers reportedly uncovered several knitted bags stuffed with compressed ganja.

The massive haul is estimated to carry a street value of about $15.1 million.

The four men are now facing a raft of charges, including possession of ganja, dealing in ganja, trafficking ganja, taking steps preparatory to export ganja and conspiracy to export ganja.

Investigations into the suspected drug shipment are continuing.
